“Leap and the net will appear!” (John Burroughs)

Today I was reading a few articles in “More” magazine.  It’s a great magazine with articles that are pertinent to my life and that of the Brooke Tribe.  The first was “Dancing with the Rockettes; Long past the tender age of tutus and tiaras our intrepid reporter realizes her dream.”  by Linda Yellin, the second, “Learn Something New Every Day” by Diana Kapp.  Both articles had one very important theme; just get out there and do it.

How many of us every day say we want to do something, we wish we could, we will some day…the timing isn’t right, I’m too busy, I’ll get there someday.  I’ve done it…as a matter of fact, I did it for some 10 years.  I kept saying I was going to find a way out of the job that I was so unhappy with…but by the time all was said and done, it took me 19 years to leave a place that was physically making me sick.  When I was leaving, a dear friend of mine told me how brave I was to follow my dreams and to really go for what I wanted…read some earlier blogs, but basically, for those who don’t know, quit job, sold house, picked up family, moved to new state and started all over again to finish education, follow dreams and get Brooke Wilder moving foward…August of 2012 (can’t believe it’s been a year already).  Even after all of that, and the joys and happiness I have found in this huge LEAP, I still revert back to old behaviors.  I’ve been saying for months now I’m going to get back to my Zumba, I’m going to really stick to reading my Bible every day…without fail, I’m going to get fit and eat healthier so I can fit into my own samples…the list goes on and on and on.

When I read these two articles, the Rockettes one is hysterical…cuz who doesn’t fear an incident of true embarrassment…but I realized that there are so many of us that stop ourselves from being our true selves by letting fear and chaos get in our way.  Chaos is our hectic too packed lives, too much stuff, too much running, too much stress, too much food…just too much chaos that leaves us feeling like we don’t have time to reach out for…much less attain things we want…dreams, goals, exploration, learning.  And fear, is a two fold demon…it’s got it’s good point that it warns us from danger…but far too often, it stops us from trying…it can cripple and often times does.  How many people do you know that have some amazing talent that could take them far in life but fear or success or failure stops them in their tracks?  I know plenty.

My friends know my relationship with my religion and God.  No, not going to preach, but often times when reading my Bible, I find so many things pertinent to life itself.  The image for this post is full of quotes from people of ours and previous times…for me…the grand authority in life is God.  A quote I found is very relevant to this topic.  James 1:22 “However, become doers of the word+ and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves with false reasoning.”  Action is required.

Do you want to be one of those people that is always saying they want to do something…and people can recite word for word what that is…because they’ve heard it so many times?   Do you want to go through life wishing you’d done more and regretting not doing it?  I’m not saying go with every gut feeling, do what is right for you and when necessary put in time for research…but don’t hold yourself back.  Take that leap, move to action…take the dance class, read the Bible from beginning to end, learn Italian, maybe even go to Italy if that’s on your thing to do…I hate the term “Bucket List”…because most people are about to kick it when they actually start working on it…why not just have a life list and start scratching it off.  Start small…gradually get bigger…then go for that big whopper…or you could be like me and just start with the whale and go from there.  See what happens.  Maybe fail…maybe succeed…but in the end…you will have learned something that will stay with you forever.
